Trinity House is the name of the British agency in charge of the care and manning of lighthouses and lightships which have guided sailors into ports and away from dangers since the 16th century.
Artifacts made by British lighthouse keepers were marketed directly to the sailing captains and owners of the ships they aided. Fine inlaid woodwork is a telltale attribute of their learned craft, with parquetry and marquetry examples in existence. The Trinity House Box, for letter writing, sewing, and tea storage are very desired, as well as the uniquely stylized tables and ship models members of the service built.
This example is a bank or coin box and has excellent detail including portraits of ships on four sides including two named vessels the FIRE QUEEN and the MATILDA. Also interesting is the portrait of a steamsail ship with sailors aboard near a coastline with many buildings and a tiny rowboat passing by. More than one of the portraits has an interesting background- in one a fortification, another a lighthouse, and another a factory. The work here is exceptionally intricate on all sides and in the inlaid geometric designs of the top panel.
