A fine chronometer from a top London maker of the period. The face reads, "John Poole, Maker to the Admiralty, 57 Fenchurch St., London." The serial number, 2993 confirms the date of this chronometer as 1859.
Set within its original period beautiful rosewood and brass inlaid case, also with plaques for the maker's name and address and the matching serial number. The wood grain of the case is outstanding.
Research indicates that for a time this Poole chronometer #2993 belonged to the ship CHARLES E. MOODY, a wooden DownEaster built in Maine in 1883. The MOODY was owned by Northwestern Fisheries and employed in the Alaska cannery trade. While at anchor in Naknek, the ship caught fire and burned to the waterline in June of 1920- a total loss. One of her anchors is preserved at Naknek.
