This WW2 era US Naval Battle Lantern would have been used for emergency lighting aboard ships or submarines. The lamp bears a rare inscription cut into the bakelite exterior marking it as assigned to the Captain's Sea Cabin.
On the face the lamp is marked USN and NM, Serial No. S74434-4, SYM 100.2 - versions of this lamp are still in use by the Navy today though the later ones are bright yellow and can be plugged in to charge. This one runs on batteries only.
